Abstract The occurrence of industrial brownfield sites in mountain regions is emerging as a key spatial development challenge. European Alps offer privileged case study area this regards due to their high level maturity and the clear evidences an ongoing structural change. difference between urban brownfields seems lie not much content sites, which indeed functionally related certain industries processes, but more on physical non-physical relationships with context. misunderstanding these specific conditions leads often incomplete or even failed transformation attempts, proved by few examples two recurring strategies implemented Alps: building recycling land recycling. An alternative approach capable highlighting enhancing infrastructural specificity brownfields, based holistic understanding landscape, might help overcome existing planning management shortcomings.
